Buckingham Palace State Rooms

Yesterday morning Page started his two classes:  Business Strategy:  From Mercantilism to Global Capitalism, followed by Shakespeare on Leadership.  By 12:45 he was done for the day and suggested we go check out the Buckingham Palace State Rooms tour that will soon be closing.  I think this two month exhibit is held every summer while Queen Elizabeth is in Scotland and there are no state visits.

microsite_royal_welcomeThere were two tickets left for the 2:15 tour so we went for it!  The tube people did not go on strike. (They were going to strike T – F, just four days, to complain about having the tube open 24/7.  Presently the tube closes around midnight or so.)  Because it has been raining we went underground.  The tour was well organized, but crowded with groups entering every 15 minutes.  Our individual headsets had touchscreen iPads for additional information so we stayed longer than most people. The art gallery had many Rubens and van Dycks.  The rooms were designed by architect John Nash for King George IV.

My absolute favorite was the Ballroom set up for a state/royal dinner and the progression of three days it takes just to set the table!  Anyone who knows me knows I like setting a fancy table much better than cooking a fancy meal!

The 20+ rooms we saw started with the front entrance and concluded with the outside backyard garden where the queen entertains 8,000 visitors once a year.  This was a totally different tour from The Queen’s Gallery that we saw 12 years ago in Buckingham Palace.
